The White House Turns Trump Into the Mandalorian for Star Wars Day and Fans Are Not Having It

The White House Turns Trump Into the Mandalorian for Star Wars Day and Fans Are Not Having It

On May 4th, 2026, the official White House X account posted an AI-generated image of Donald Trump as The Mandalorian‘s Din Djarin, complete with Grogu tucked at his side and an American flag in hand. The caption read: “In a galaxy that demands strength, America stands ready. This is the way. May the 4th be with you.”

The internet did not take this lying down.

This Is NOT the Way

The image depicts Trump in the armored bounty hunter’s gear alongside Grogu, better known as Baby Yoda — while the Mandalorian helmet is conspicuously held rather than worn. Anyone who has spent five minutes with The Mandalorian knows why that’s a problem. The protagonist belongs to a sect where the helmet is more than armor, it is a spiritual commitment. Showing your face to the galaxy is about as Mandalorian as showing up to a Jedi trial in a Supreme hoodie.

That wasn’t the only slip. Eagle-eyed viewers also spotted a corrupted rendering of the American flag in the image, an AI hallucination that gave Old Glory the wrong number of stripes. Of course, if you’re going to dress the president up as a space bounty hunter, accuracy to the national flag probably should have been step one.

The top-voted responses on the post were AI counter-images turning Trump into Jabba the Hutt, including one posted by a Gavin Newsom fan account. Another top comment swapped Baby Yoda out for Vladimir Putin. The internet, doing what it does.

This follows a familiar pattern, ahead of the 2024 election, Trump shared an image depicting himself as Superman, with JD Vance cast as Batman. Last month, he posted an AI image of himself as a Christ-like figure healing a sick man, which was later pulled from Truth Social after backlash. And last Star Wars Day, the White House shared an image of Trump wielding a red lightsaber, a color traditionally reserved for Sith Lords and franchise villains. The New York Post noted the 2026 version was a “lighter” post by comparison. Sure.

The Mando and Grogu Movie Is Actually Coming

The timing is not accidental. The post lands as Disney ramps up its promotional campaign for the first Star Wars film in seven years, with The Mandalorian & Grogu opening in theaters on May 22nd. Jon Favreau directed the film, which follows Pedro Pascal‘s Din Djarin and Grogu as they navigate a galaxy still recovering from the fall of the Empire. The film also stars Jeremy Allen White and Sigourney Weaver, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Lucasfilm had no comment on the image. Noted.

For UK fans, The Mandalorian & Grogu opens in British cinemas on May 22nd, 2026, with a Disney+ streaming window to follow. The BBFC has not yet issued a rating for the film, but expect something in the 12A territory given the franchise’s track record.

As for whether the White House will be doing this again next May the 4th — the administration’s reliance on high-contrast, cinematic AI visuals is increasingly being seen as a liability, with outputs regularly featuring hallucinated details that become meme fodder faster than the original post. So, probably yes.

We’ll keep you posted on updates about The Mandalorian & Grogu as the project develops.
