Lionsgate Sets September 2027 Release Date For New Blair Witch Movie

So, the good news is that we finally have a release date for the next Blair Witch movie. The better news is that two of the original cast members are actually getting paid for it this time.

Lionsgate confirmed the date in a cryptic social media video on June 23rd, with the franchise’s stick-figure totem spelling out the numbers in twigs hanging from forest branches. The new Blair Witch lands in theaters on September 24th, 2027.

Plot details are still under wraps, which honestly tracks. According to The Wrap, the project comes from Dylan Clark, a YouTube horror filmmaker who’s been quietly building Hollywood cred with his shorts Portrait of God and Story Time. He’s directing and rewriting a script originally penned by Chris Thomas Devlin.

The Backstory

The original The Blair Witch Project is the found-footage holy text. It cost next to nothing, grossed almost $250 million worldwide, and got a BBFC ’15’ rating in the UK for, among other things, frequent strong language and a scene where a character finds bloody human entrails wrapped in someone’s clothes. Not bad for a film shot on a Hi8 camcorder.

There’s an argument to be made that this franchise has never figured out how to follow that up. Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2 stumbled to $48 million in 2000, and Adam Wingard‘s 2016 redo only managed $45 million. Lionsgate is clearly hoping the third attempt is the charm.

Here’s the part that actually matters: Joshua Leonard and Michael C. Williams, two of the original film’s stars, are on board as executive producers. According to The Hollywood Reporter, they’re joined by original directors Eduardo Sánchez, Daniel Myrick, and Gregg Hale. This matters because Leonard, Williams, and Heather Donahue have spent years saying Artisan Entertainment never paid them properly for turning them into the faces of one of the most profitable indie films ever made.

James Wan and Jason Blum are producing through their Atomic Monster-Blumhouse banner, alongside Roy Lee, Adam Hendricks, and Greg Gilreath. Steven Schneider is also executive producing.

No cast has been announced yet. We’ll keep you posted on updates about Blair Witch as the project develops.
