Johnny Cage takes center stage

The trailer makes clear that this chapter centers heavily on Johnny Cage, played by Urban. The Hollywood action star finds himself drafted into the deadly Mortal Kombat tournament, cast as a reluctant hero forced to level up fast as Earthrealm faces its greatest threat.

As the trailer opens, Cage is seen sitting at a convention stall surrounded by merchandise from his films, including titles such as Citizen Cage and Uncaged Fury. The look on his face hints at a fading star who senses the world has moved on.

Lord Raiden, played by Tadanobu Asano, can be heard recruiting Cage in voiceover, warning him that the fate of eight billion people rests on the outcome of Mortal Kombat. Liu Kang, played by Ludi Lin, adds that one more defeat means Earth is gone.

Ed Boon cameo and the return of Techno Syndrome

Midway through the trailer, Cage is seen drowning his sorrows at a bar before asking for one more drink. The bartender pouring it is none other than Ed Boon, co-creator of the Mortal Kombat video game franchise — essentially playing himself.

Perhaps equally exciting for longtime fans is the return of Techno Syndrome, the 1990s earworm that has served as the franchise’s unofficial anthem. It appears to be used in the trailer and may feature in the film itself.

New villains confirmed: Quan Chi and Noob Saibot

The trailer also delivers what may be audiences’ first clear look at Damon Herriman’s Quan Chi, alongside further glimpses of Martyn Ford’s Shao Kahn. Additionally, the Scorpion and Noob Saibot fight sequence teased at New York Comic-Con 2025 is extended here.

Noob Saibot is confirmed as a resurrected Bi-Han, the Sub-Zero of the first film. The tournament mechanics are on full display, with one-on-one fights styled to echo the source games — including Shao Kahn versus Kitana and Liu Kang versus Kung Lao.

Why this matters

The 2021 original earned a 55% critical score on Rotten Tomatoes but an 85% audience rating, suggesting strong appeal among franchise fans. It grossed $84.4 million worldwide on a $55 million budget before becoming a major streaming hit on HBO Max.

The sequel is positioned to avoid direct box-office competition on its opening weekend, arriving two weeks before Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu. If marketing momentum holds, Mortal Kombat II could serve as the film to kick off summer 2026.

Director Simon McQuoid returns at the helm, with Jeremy Slater credited for the screenplay. The film is produced by Todd Garner, James Wan, Toby Emmerich, E. Bennett Walsh, and McQuoid himself, according to Smart Cine.

A third film in the franchise is already in development, according to Wikipedia’s production notes. Co-writer Greg Russo has previously described the reboot as a planned trilogy, with the first film set before the tournament, the second during it, and a third set after.

Mortal Kombat II opens in theaters and IMAX on May 8, 2026, with international screenings beginning May 6. Tickets are on sale now.
