A Minecraft Movie Squared Is Official and Kirsten Dunst Is In
Warner Bros. and Legendary officially unveiled the title for their A Minecraft Movie sequel on Saturday. The follow-up is called A Minecraft Movie Squared, and it is set to hit theaters on July 23, 2027.
The announcement came via a joint Instagram post from the studios and the official Minecraft account. “Ready for another adventure? The world of #Minecraft is expanding once again with A Minecraft Movie Squared!,” the post read.

Jack Black, Jason Momoa, Sebastian Hansen (A Minecraft Movie), Emma Myers, Danielle Brooks, and Jennifer Coolidge are all set to return. New to the cast is Kirsten Dunst, joining the sequel as Alex. A behind-the-scenes featurette debuted during Minecraft Live, featuring footage shot on location in New Zealand.
Director Jared Hess is back to helm the sequel and is co-writing the script with Chris Galletta, one of the scribes on the original, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Producers include Mary Parent, Cale Boyter, Roy Lee, Eric McLeod, Kayleen Walters, Torfi Frans Ólafsson, and Momoa.
The original A Minecraft Movie grossed $957.8 million globally, making it the second-highest-grossing film of 2025. For UK fans, no separate release date has been confirmed yet, though Warner Bros. typically rolls out its major tentpoles day-and-date with North America. No BBFC rating has been assigned at this stage.
It is a significant get for a sequel that follows a film with famously divisive reviews. The original cleared a billion dollars without much critical help. Dunst joining suggests the video game adaptation boom has no intention of slowing down.
