Roblox Survival Horror Game 99 Nights in the Forest Movie in the Works

20th Century Studios has acquired the theatrical film rights to 99 Nights in the Forest in a competitive bidding situation. No writer or director is attached at this stage, but the game’s New Zealand-based developers — Alec Kieft, Matthew Hufton, and Cameron Angland of Grandma’s Favourite Games — will serve as executive producers. J.R. Young will oversee the project for the studio.

99 Nights in the Forest is an action-survival game where players must brave 99 nights in a haunted forest. The mission: rescue four lost children while fending off vicious deer and other beasts. The game uses a dynamic difficulty system where monster attack frequency and strength increase as nights progress.

It marks the first time 20th Century Studios is tackling a feature adaptation of a video game under Disney ownership. The studio previously produced game-to-film adaptations like Hitman and Assassin’s Creed back in the Fox era — neither of which exactly set the world on fire, but sure. The game has racked up nearly 26 billion lifetime visits and a 14.2 million all-time peak player count, currently sitting at seventh most-played in Roblox history.

The game was inspired by a real 2023 plane crash in Colombia, where four children miraculously survived 40 days in the Amazon rainforest. The developers combined that true story with supernatural horror elements to build out the game’s world.

David Greenbaum, president of Disney Live Action and 20th Century Studios, said in a statement that the Grandma’s Favourite Games team brings “world-building ideas that feel innately cinematic.” The developers, for their part, called working with Disney and 20th “surreal.” They added that they’re excited “to create some scares in an entirely new medium.”

We’ll keep you posted on updates about 99 Nights in the Forest as the project develops.
