Warner Bros. delays The Batman: Part II again, moving release to February 2028
Warner Bros. has pushed The Batman: Part II from 1 October 2027 to 18 February 2028, giving director Matt Reeves more time in post-production after a reshuffled release slate reported by Deadline on 15 July 2026.
TL;DR
- The Batman: Part II moves to 18 February 2028 — its third date change since the project was first scheduled.
- The vacated 1 October 2027 slot now goes to J.J. Abrams’ sci-fi film The Great Beyond.
- Robert Pattinson, Andy Serkis and Colin Farrell return, joined by new cast members Scarlett Johansson and Sebastian Stan.
- Reeves marked the news by releasing early camera-test footage of Pattinson back in the cowl.
Why the release date changed
Reeves shared the new date alongside a short camera-test clip of Pattinson standing in a snowy Gotham, according to Variety. The studio said the extra four months give Reeves additional time in post-production, a point echoed by the Hollywood Reporter.
The sequel was originally dated for 3 October 2025 before the 2023 writers’ and actors’ strikes pushed it to October 2026, then to October 2027. Filming only began this month, roughly two years after Reeves started writing the script.

DC Studios co-chief James Gunn has previously defended long sequel gaps, pointing to the seven years between Alien and Aliens and the six years between Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Vol. 3, according to Variety’s report.
A reshuffled Warner Bros. slate
The move set off a chain reaction across the studio’s 2026–2027 calendar. Abrams’ The Great Beyond, starring Glen Powell and Jenna Ortega, shifts from 13 November 2026 into the date Part II just vacated. Sam Esmail’s thriller Panic Carefully slides from 26 February 2027 to 9 April 2027, and New Line’s Revenge of La Llorona now fills the 26 February 2027 slot, per Deadline.
The new February date also lands on the four-day Presidents Day weekend in the US — a scheduling move similar to Black Panther‘s 2018 rollout.
Who’s returning to Gotham
Pattinson reprises Bruce Wayne, with Andy Serkis back as Alfred and Colin Farrell returning as Penguin. Scarlett Johansson and Sebastian Stan join the cast in roles that haven’t been officially detailed, alongside Jayme Lawson, Charles Dance, Gil Perez-Abraham and Sebastian Koch, according to Deadline’s casting rundown. Our previous coverage looked at Reeves teasing which cast members would be back before the shoot began, and we’ve also tracked reports that Barry Keoghan’s Joker could return for the sequel.
The delay also comes as Warner Bros. Discovery works through a separate corporate story: UK regulators opened a formal probe into Paramount’s proposed £81 billion ($110 billion) takeover of the studio, a deal that could affect how future DC releases are scheduled and marketed.

The first film was passed 15 by the British Board of Film Classification, and Part II is reportedly expected to carry a similar certificate, though the BBFC won’t confirm a rating until closer to release. A UK cinema date and any Imax rollout details for Part II haven’t been confirmed separately from the global 18 February 2028 date.
What’s next
The Batman: Part II is now in production, with Warner Bros. yet to confirm a marketing campaign timeline. The studio has not given an official reason for the latest shift beyond the additional post-production window.
