Mark Byrne’s indie horror whodunit ‘Blood and Breakfast’ streams free on Tubi UK

Independent filmmaker Mark Byrne wrote, directed and produced Blood and Breakfast, a low-budget slasher mystery that traps survivors of a serial killer inside a historic Pennsylvania inn. A slasher with a mystery hook

Blood and Breakfast follows a group of strangers who each survived an earlier brush with a serial killer, only to be lured to a historic bed-and-breakfast and picked off one by one by a masked attacker. Byrne, who runs the Pennsylvania-based studio Absurd Productions Pictures, wanted a human killer with no supernatural gimmick, then layered in a whodunit structure rather than a straight chase, according to the Nerdbot interview.

The killer’s blank, hooded look was a joint call between Byrne and producer Matt Burns, with the mask itself picked by Burns and the poster designed by artist Shawn Burkett, Byrne said in the interview.

Shot inside a real, working inn

Rather than dress a house or lean on green screen, the production filmed at the Amberson House, a real working inn in Waynesboro, Pennsylvania, Byrne said. Guests can reportedly still book the rooms seen on screen. Absurd Productions Pictures says on its own site that its prior feature, the dark comedy One of One, released in April 2023, with Blood and Breakfast following in October 2024 after screenings in Pennsylvania and Ohio.

The cast is led by Mel Heflin, Matt Burns, Brandy Lyn Dalton and Nancy Anne Ridder. PopHorror‘s review praised the ensemble as the film’s highlight, calling it a fun but uneven entry in the indie slasher genre.

Free to stream in the UK

Blood and Breakfast is available now on Tubi, the ad-supported streamer that expanded into Britain in July 2024 with a launch library of more than 20,000 titles, according to a Tubi press release. That puts the film in front of UK horror fans at no cost, ads included, alongside Tubi’s wider slate of indie and catalogue titles.

What’s next for Byrne

Byrne told Nerdbot that Absurd Productions Pictures avoids sequels on principle, so a follow-up to Blood and Breakfast is unlikely. Instead, the studio’s crime film Devious Intent, centred on an art heist tangled up in a dying wish, premieres September 19 in Pennsylvania. Byrne also said the studio hopes to shoot its 2027 horror anthology, Roxy’s Brutal Bits, over the next six months.
