Jamie Dornan Is the New Aragorn in The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum
Warner Bros. dropped the full cast for The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum during its CinemaCon presentation in Las Vegas on April 14th. Now, Jamie Dornan (The Fall) is officially stepping into Strider’s boots.
Dornan takes over the role of Strider — chief of the Northern Dúnedain Rangers, later revealed as Aragorn — from Viggo Mortensen, who had been asked multiple times to return and declined. Joining him on the hunt is Leo Woodall (The White Lotus) as Halvard, another of the Dúnedain, while newcomer Kate Winslet rounds out the fresh faces as Marigol, reportedly Gollum’s Stoor Hobbit grandmother.
Returning to Middle-earth: Andy Serkis directs and reprises Gollum/Sméagol, Ian McKellen is back as Gandalf, Elijah Wood returns as Frodo, and Lee Pace (The Hobbit trilogy) reprises his role as Thranduil. Peter Jackson is on board as producer alongside original trilogy screenwriters Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens.
The film follows Aragorn’s perilous quest to capture Gollum before the creature can reveal the Ring’s location to Sauron, with the story developed largely from Tolkien’s footnotes and set between The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring, according to Deadline. Production kicks off in May, per The Hollywood Reporter. The internet, predictably, is split — though fans of The Fall are making a solid case for patience.
The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum hits theaters December 17, 2027. We’ll keep you posted on updates about The Hunt for Gollum as the project develops.
