Dave Bautista, the Guardians of the Galaxy and Dune actor, has signed on to play Kratos in Prime Video’s live-action God of War. The streamer confirmed the casting on 21 August, according to Kotaku.

Bautista replaces Ryan Hurst, who tore a bicep performing a stunt in late June. The injury required surgery and pushed producers toward a recast rather than a delay into 2027.

All of Hurst’s filmed footage will reportedly be reshot from scratch, according to Deadline. Prep work is already under way ahead of a planned mid-October restart in Vancouver.

Why we’ve been rooting for this casting since 2022

Bautista has been fans’ preferred Kratos for years, long before the show existed. In 2022, responding to a fan campaign, he joked on Instagram about loving proving people wrong, according to Syfy.

A physically demanding role on an unforgiving schedule

Kratos is built for brutal, sustained physicality, and Bautista’s background suits the part well. He spent years as a WWE champion before moving into film, a head start most actors would need months to build.

The former wrestler had already bulked up for the upcoming Highlander remake, which should ease the transition. Even so, the compressed schedule leaves little room for a traditional training camp before cameras roll again.

The rocky road that led here

God of War has struggled to find its footing on screen. Ronald D. Moore, the showrunner behind Battlestar Galactica and For All Mankind, took the project on with a two-season order already locked in.

The first-look image of Hurst as Kratos drew heavy criticism online earlier this year. David Jaffe, the original video game’s creator, dismissed the image as poorly composed while insisting the show could still succeed, according to AOL Entertainment.

What this means for UK fans

God of War will stream exclusively on Prime Video once it’s ready, reaching more than 240 countries and territories worldwide. No premiere date has been set, though Kotaku reports it is unlikely to arrive before the 2027 holiday season.

Our take: this recast might be exactly what the show needed

Recasting a lead this late is usually a red flag, but this feels different. Bautista brings the blend of physical presence and unexpected tenderness that Kratos has always needed, something he already proved playing Drax.
