Naomi Ackie Joins Maika Monroe in It Follows Sequel They Follow

David Robert Mitchell is finally bringing It Follows back — and he’s bringing some serious talent with him. Naomi Ackie is in final talks to star opposite the returning Maika Monroe in They Follow, Mitchell’s long-anticipated sequel, with Neon set to distribute domestically.

They Follow

No word yet on who Ackie will play, nor the full plot of the sequel, other than it taking place a decade after the events of the original film. Of course, details being kept vague is basically a horror sequel tradition at this point.

Ackie is coming off an Independent Spirit Award win for her supporting turn in Sorry, Baby, the A24 drama from Eva Victor. She’s also recently been seen in Bong Joon Ho‘s Mickey 17, Zoë Kravitz‘s Blink Twice, and Boots Riley‘s I Love Boosters. For UK horror fans, it’s worth noting that Ackie is a London-born BAFTA winner — she took home Best Supporting Actress for The End of the F***ing World back in 2020 — so this is very much a British actress landing in one of the most anticipated American horror sequels in years.

They Follow is eyeing a summer production start. Mitchell is also producing alongside Jake Weiner and Chris Bender of Good Fear Content, plus original It Follows producers David Kaplan, Erik Rommesmo, Rebecca Green, and Laura Smith.

As for what They Follow is actually about, Monroe recently teased that the threat is now “everywhere” and that “it’s very dark.” That tracks. The original It Follows, which grossed over $23 million from a $1.3 million budget, spent a decade earning its reputation as a modern horror classic. Handing the sequel to a performer with Ackie’s range is a very good sign.

News of the casting comes ahead of Mitchell’s next feature The End of Oak Street, a Warner Bros. sci-fi film starring Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor, releasing 14 August. So Mitchell is staying busy — but horror is clearly where his heart is. According to Deadline, reps for Neon couldn’t be reached for comment on the casting.

We’ll keep you posted on updates about They Follow as the project develops.
