Jason Momoa Drops Out of the Helldivers Movie and Sony Is Looking for a New Face

Jason Momoa is no longer starring in Sony’s upcoming Helldivers adaptation. The news broke Wednesday, and no one is explaining why.

Deadline was first to report the departure, with The Hollywood Reporter confirming shortly after. No reason was given for Momoa’s exit. His camp has not issued a statement. Sony has not commented. It’s just gone.

Momoa had only been attached since February 2026, when his casting was announced alongside director Justin Lin of Fast & Furious fame. That’s a pretty short run.

Sony is now actively searching for a new lead. Other cast members are also still being sought, according to Variety. The film is still locked in for a November 10, 2027 theatrical release — which means the pressure to find someone is very real.

Helldivers

The project is based on Arrowhead Game Studios’ cooperative shooter franchise. The original Helldivers game dropped in 2015, and Helldivers 2 followed in 2024 and sold over 12 million units combined. It’s the kind of numbers that make Hollywood very interested very fast.

The concept follows an elite squad of soldiers — the Helldivers — fighting alien threats to the fictional planet of Super Earth. Think Starship Troopers, but PlayStation-branded. The script was written by Gary Dauberman, who did It and the recent Until Dawn film. Sony and PlayStation Productions are producing alongside Hutch Parker and Lin through his Perfect Storm Entertainment banner.

Sony and PlayStation have done this before. Their 2022 video game adaptation Uncharted with Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg grossed $407 million worldwide. Twisted Metal on Peacock and The Last of Us on HBO followed. The pipeline works, and they clearly intend to keep it going — Momoa or not. For fans in the UK, Helldivers is currently targeting a November 2027 release across all markets, though no specific UK distribution details have been confirmed.

Momoa is not short of work. He’s still lined up for Street Fighter as Blanka, Dune: Part 3 as Duncan Idaho, Supergirl as Lobo, and the already-confirmed A Minecraft Movie: Squared. So he’ll be fine.

Sony, meanwhile, has a November 2027 date to keep and no star to fill it.

We’ll keep you posted on updates about Helldivers as the project develops.
