The Amazing Digital Circus episode 9 review: a bittersweet, barnstorming finale that sticks the landing

The Amazing Digital Circus: The Last Act Breaks Records at the Global Box Office

The Amazing Digital Circus: The Last Act just proved that YouTube can sell out a cinema.

The theatrical finale to Gooseworx and Glitch Productions’ beloved animated series hit more than 5,700 cinemas worldwide on June 4 — and promptly broke records. The film earned an estimated $36.6 million worldwide during its opening weekend, playing across the United States, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and Mexico. Strong presales had already tipped everyone off that this one was going to land differently.

In the United States, where Fathom Entertainment handled distribution, the film pulled in more than $20.2 million across approximately 2,200 theaters during its opening four-day weekend. That’s enough to set several Fathom presales records and land the film at number three among new releases and number five overall for the weekend. Not bad for an indie animated series that started life as a free YouTube upload.

The European numbers were just as striking. Distributor Piece of Magic Entertainment reported $12.7 million across approximately 3,000 screens in 38 markets, with the film ranking first on opening day in the UK, France, Benelux, Spain, and Poland. In the UK specifically, according to Boxoffice Pro, The Last Act grossed $3.5 million (£2.67 million) from 573 cinemas and finished in the weekend’s top five — solid proof that the fandom translates just fine across the Atlantic.

Caspar Nadaud, chief entertainment officer and founder of Piece of Magic Entertainment, said the result “showcases that cinemas have a unique power to bring fan communities together.” Ray Nutt, CEO of Fathom Entertainment, called the receipts “jaw-dropping” and pointed to it as proof of “the power and appeal of bringing innovative content with established fanbases to the big screen,”according to Boxoffice Pro.

The Last Act is a feature-length version of the final two episodes of The Amazing Digital Circus — episodes 8 and 9 — showing the conclusion of the cast of characters trapped in a digital world under the mercy of an unstable ringmaster. The series first debuted on YouTube in October 2023 and became one of the most-watched pieces of independent animation on the internet, surpassing one billion views before its theatrical run. Briefledger’s own The Amazing Digital Circus Episode 9 review and Gameoverse review from Glitch Productions have already covered what makes this creative team worth watching.

The Last Act will receive its online release after its theatrical run. No streaming date has been confirmed yet.

We’ll keep you posted on updates about The Amazing Digital Circus: The Last Act as the project develops.
