Stan Winston—legendary special effects artist behind Terminator, Aliens, and Jurassic Park—is getting the documentary treatment. According to Deadline, a new doc titled Monster Maker will chronicle the life and innovations of the late FX pioneer who fundamentally changed how movie monsters got made. Winston passed in 2008, but his studio—which still operates under his name—is backing the project.
The documentary will trace Winston’s rise from practical effects enthusiast to industry titan, covering his breakout work on James Cameron’s Terminator (1984) through his collaborations with Spielberg on Jurassic Park and beyond. Per The Hollywood Reporter, the film will include interviews with directors, fellow artists, and archival footage from Winston’s personal collection—some of which has never been seen publicly.
Winston’s influence on modern filmmaking can’t be overstated. Before CGI took over, his team hand-crafted alien xenomorphs, T-800 skeletons, and velociraptors that still hold up today. Monster Maker aims to remind audiences what “practical” actually looked like when you had to build it, move it, and film it in one take.
The doc is set for a limited theatrical run in the US, with BBC News confirming a UK cinema release in October 2026, rated PG for discussion of film techniques. A home release is expected on streaming platforms early 2027.
We’ll keep you posted on updates about Monster Maker as the project develops.
