The live-action adaptation is officially in development, with Cena set to play the title role of the egocentric blonde-haired heartthrob who’s convinced every woman on Earth wants him. His reality: significantly different.
The project marks a major swing for the character. Warner Bros. actually acquired the rights back in 2002 and attached The Rock to star, but the studio abandoned the effort after struggling to translate the cartoon’s exaggerated ’90s pickup-artist energy into something workable on screen. Cena’s physical comedy chops and self-aware charm may prove to be exactly what this film needs to thread that needle.
Produced by Mattel Films and Skydance Media, the film is being developed as a comedy that leans into the absurdity of the source material rather than playing it straight. The Rock even endorsed the news on X, writing, “Cena’s gonna kill this. Good luck, champ.”
