Band confirms death in Instagram post
L7 announced Finch’s death on Instagram on Saturday. The band said Finch had waged “a long courageous fight with brain cancer,” according to Deadline.
A representative for the band followed with a statement to Rolling Stone, calling Finch “a true original who lived entirely on her own terms.”
A diagnosis, then a fast decline
Finch’s illness became public only weeks before her death. According to a GoFundMe page for her care, cited by American Songwriter, “unforeseen complications” followed an initial course of radiation treatment.
The fund had a $350,000 goal and quickly exceeded it, drawing donations from musicians including members of Green Day, Pearl Jam and Tool.

Finch was also treated for thyroid cancer in 2011. She had already withdrawn from L7’s upcoming US tour dates on medical grounds.
From the Sunset Strip to a farewell tour
L7 vocalist-guitarist Donita Sparks and Suzi Gardner formed the band in Los Angeles in 1985. Finch joined the following year and remained through the band’s commercial peak.
Their breakout record, “Bricks Are Heavy,” reached number 24 on the UK albums chart — a rare crossover for a band otherwise rooted in the US alternative scene.

Finch left the band in 1996, rejoined in 2014, and played on 2019’s “Scatter the Rats.” She had been due to join L7’s farewell run, dubbed the Last Hurrah tour, this autumn. Sparks said the tour would be one “last, loud, fun, and hopefully unforgettable night of rock and roll,” per Louder. No UK date has yet been announced for the tour.

Before L7, Finch played alongside Courtney Love in the short-lived band Sugar Baby Doll. She later fronted her own projects, OtherStarPeople and the Shocker.
Molly Neuman — drummer for the band Bratmobile and now president of the music-publishing firm Songtrust — said she was “grateful for the time I had” with Finch, per Variety.
