What is Animal Hospital on Roblox? My 12-year-old explains the summer’s biggest craze

My 12-year-old has spent this UK summer holiday glued to Animal Hospital, the Roblox horror game that racked up hundreds of millions of visits after developer Roytt launched it on 10 May 2026. Here’s what UK parents need to know.

TL;DR

  • Animal Hospital is a co-op Roblox horror game where players check in “patients” on a night shift while spotting hidden monsters called anomalies.
  • It launched on 10 May 2026 and has now been played more than 1.7 billion times, according to Roblox tracking site Rolimon’s.
  • Roblox carries a “Parental Guidance Recommended” rating in the UK (previously PEGI 7); individual games like this one are not separately rated.
  • My 12-year-old rates the scares “more creepy than terrifying” — the full conversation is below.

What is Animal Hospital, exactly?

Animal Hospital, listed on Roblox as Animal Hospital (Anomaly), is a co-op survival horror game built by Roytt and the Animal Anomaly development team. It launched on 10 May 2026 and quickly became one of the platform’s most-played experiences of the year, according to the Animal Hospital Wiki, arriving amid a strong year for the wider platform, per Roblox Corporation statistics.

What is Animal Hospital, exactly?

Up to four players take a night shift at a hospital for cartoon-style animal patients. The job sounds simple: check each patient in, work out what’s wrong, and treat them in the right room. The catch, according to gaming outlet GosuGamers, is that some patients are secretly “anomalies” in disguise, and letting one slip through can end the shift for the whole team.

Players watch a “Sanity” meter instead of a health bar, and unlock ten Classes with their own perks as they earn in-game currency, GosuGamers reported. The shift-streak system echoes another Roblox hit, 99 Nights in the Forest, which is also heading to the big screen.

I sat down with my 12-year-old to find out more

To get the real story, I handed my 12-year-old the questions parents actually want answered.

What even is this game? “You’re basically a receptionist and you have to figure out which animals are real patients and which ones are monsters pretending to be patients. If you mess up, bad stuff happens.”

Is it scary? “It’s more creepy than terrifying. Some bits make you jump, but it’s not like a proper horror film. My friends play it at sleepovers and nobody’s had nightmares.”

What’s the actual goal? “You want to survive as many shifts as you can. Everyone in the lobby can see your streak, so you kind of want to keep it going.”

Do you spend real money on it? “You don’t have to. Most Classes you can buy with the coins you earn in-game. A couple of the rare ones cost Robux, but I’ve never bought any.”

Why do you think it’s so popular right now? “Because you actually have to pay attention instead of just running around. And the characters are kind of cute, which makes it weirder when they turn out to be evil.”

Would you recommend it to a younger sibling? “Maybe not anyone under nine. It’s not gory, but the jump moments could freak out a little kid.”

Is Animal Hospital safe for kids? The UK ratings, explained

Roblox does not give individual games their own age rating. The platform as a whole now carries PEGI’s “Parental Guidance Recommended” label in the UK, which replaced the older PEGI 7 rating because of the sheer range of user-made content on the platform, according to PEGI’s official ratings body. On the app stores, Roblox sits at 10+ on Google Play and 12+ on Apple’s App Store, per parent-safety charity Internet Matters and school-safety group Safer Schools.

Animal Hospital itself carries an internal Roblox content-maturity label of “Minimal,” meaning light blood, mild violence and occasional jump scares, GosuGamers reported. Roblox’s chief safety officer, Matt Kaufman, said the platform’s move toward globally recognised ratings systems such as PEGI is meant to give parents more clarity over what their children are playing, according to an official Roblox newsroom statement.

The launch also lands amid a broader boom for British gaming — the UK video games market hit a record £8.76 billion in value this year.

The verdict

Roblox horror games rise and fall fast, but Animal Hospital’s slow-burn format and low spending pressure make it one of the more parent-friendly horror hits to sweep the platform this year. If your child is prone to nightmares, it’s worth watching a shift or two together before letting them play solo — the game’s own community FAQ recommends exactly that for younger or more sensitive players.

For now, in my house at least, the night shift continues.
