House of the Dragon Season 3 Reveals the Battle of the Gullet at SXSW London
On June 5, the cast and crew of House of the Dragon took the stage at SXSW London’s Shoreditch Town Hall for a panel called “Win or Die: Inside the New Season.” Before anyone said a word, a teaser reel played. Numbers flashed on screen — 15,000 stunt crowd members, 3,500 props, 25 tons of propane. And then, over footage of a warship detonating in a fireball: “23 stunt performers ignited in one take — a new world record!”
So, yeah. They’re not going subtle on this one.

Showrunner Ryan Condal confirmed what book readers have been quietly dreading and desperately hoping for in equal measure: the Battle of the Gullet hits in episode one. Not halfway through. Not as a finale. Episode one. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Condal told the panel he and production designer Jim Clay had been “haunted” by the sequence for four years.
“The amount of construction that you guys did for just the one episode is kind of crazy and frankly irresponsible,” Condal said. “But it was necessary to tell the story.”
To pull it off, the production built a wet tank, a dry tank, an underwater tank, and four separate boat sets — then pumped in three million litres of water. Steve Toussaint (The Sea Snake) had to figure out how to kick people while locked in full medieval armor. Spoiler: he could not get his foot above anyone’s knees. Abigail Thorn trained with stunt doubles who had previously played Captain America, Deadpool, and Wonder Woman, put on 10 to 15kg in the process, and then accidentally caught on fire on set. Her ship is called Bitchfist. Condal had to keep a straight face when the director told him.

Abubakar Salim, Harry Collett, and Jefferson Hall also featured on the panel alongside Toussaint and Thorn. The SXSW London event — held at Shoreditch Town Hall on June 5 — is part of the festival’s inaugural UK run, marking the first time the Austin-born event has come to Britain.
Condal framed the season’s central theme as proximity to power: “What does the Iron Throne do to you when you’re in proximity of it?” He described the feeling of the season as one of “inexorability” — a point of no return that the family has well and truly passed.
One last detail worth knowing: while filming the Battle of the Gullet on their lot, the cast could see straight onto the set of HBO’s new Harry Potter series next door. Condal described looking up from a medieval naval battle to find half of Privet Drive staring back at him. “Times are tough,” he deadpanned.
House of the Dragon Season 3 premieres June 21 on HBO and Sky Atlantic in the UK, where it streams via NOW — no confirmed BBFC rating has been issued yet, though the series has previously aired with a TV-MA equivalent classification.
