Sean Astin says he ‘had to sell’ his house due to low Lord of the Rings pay

Sean Astin revealed in an interview published Monday that he sold his home in the early 2000s after negotiating just $250,000 for the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy, despite the films grossing nearly $3 billion worldwide.

‘It was not a lot of money’

Astin, 55, played Samwise Gamgee in all three Peter Jackson films and now serves as the national president of the actors’ union SAG-AFTRA. He said his early-2000s fame far outpaced his paycheck.

“I was not prepared for that level of visibility and access,” Astin said, according to Variety. “There was a disconnect between the attention that I was getting and how much money we had.”

He added that the shortfall forced a difficult decision. “It was not a lot of money! In fact, I had to sell my house because I negotiated such a small amount on the trilogy,” Astin said, according to Variety.

A trilogy-sized payday problem

Astin previously said on the Jim & Sam Show in 2017 that he earned around $75,000 per film, putting his total trilogy salary near $250,000 with no residual payments attached. Co-star Orlando Bloom, who played Legolas, has said he was paid about $175,000 for the same three films.

Franchise return still open

Astin said he’s now “very comfortable financially,” but the door to reprising Sam hasn’t closed. Two new entries are in the works: The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, directed by Andy Serkis, and an untitled follow-up co-written by Stephen Colbert.

Astin hasn’t been confirmed for either project. Asked whether he’d push for better pay this time, he said simply, “Goddamn right.”
