The Reimagining Begins

So, Tobe Hooper’s The Texas Chain Saw Massacre is getting a second life—literally traced by hand. Dark Sky Films and Exurbia Films just announced a rotoscoped animated version of the 1974 masterpiece, and yes, every frame will be illustrated by hand. No AI shortcuts.

The animation direction falls to Austin-based artist Paul Beck, who served as lead animator on Richard Linklater’s Waking Life and A Scanner Darkly. Beck and his team will deploy rotoscoping—a labor-intensive technique where artists meticulously trace over live-action footage frame by frame. It’s the same discipline used in early Disney classics like Snow White and Cinderella, and in more recent work like Ralph Bakshi’s The Lord of the Rings.

According to Dark Sky’s statement via UPI, the team aims to preserve the original film’s “performances, atmosphere, and intensity” while presenting “a striking new visual experience.” The press release explicitly stresses: no artificial intelligence. Given the AI backlash in indie filmmaking, that’s refreshingly candid.

On August 18—Texas Chain Saw Day—theatrical audiences nationwide will get an exclusive behind-the-scenes featurette and sneak peek at production footage. The Fathom Entertainment screening also brings Hooper’s 1974 original back to theaters in 4K. You can grab tickets now.

The animated film’s UK release date and BBFC rating remain TBA. That said, the original Texas Chain Saw Massacre has its own notorious UK history—it was banned outright in 1974, deemed the “pornography of terror” by the BBFC, and didn’t get a legitimate uncut release until the late 1990s. The animated version arrives in a very different censorship landscape.
