Verity tracks for $19M–$25M opening as Hathaway and Johnson face Digger

What the tracking numbers show

Pre-sales for the Colleen Hoover adaptation are strong, according to Comic Basics. Box Office Theory puts the opening at $20 million to $29 million. Columnist Todd Thatcher said a start in the low to mid $20 millions looks doable.

Expectations have cooled slightly. Box Office Pro projected $30 million to $40 million about two weeks ago.

How Verity compares with other Colleen Hoover films

Actor Dakota Johnson plays a writer hired by a husband, played by Josh Hartnett, to finish his wife’s bestselling book series. Hathaway plays the wife, who is incapacitated after a car accident, according to Box Office Pro. Amazon MGM also released a new Verity trailer ahead of the opening.

Hoover’s three earlier adaptations opened lower, apart from one. It Ends with Us debuted to $50 million domestically, Reminders of Him to $17.8 million and Regretting You to $13.6 million.

All three were PG-13. Verity is rated R, and Box Office Pro compared its tone to A Simple Favor ($16 million) and The Housemaid ($19 million).

Digger and the wider October weekend

Verity opens against Digger, a Cruise-fronted comedy. Cruise is also reuniting with Hathaway for Days of Thunder 2.

Resident Evil broke franchise records with a $60 million opening the previous weekend, according to Comic Basics.

SlashFilm has predicted Verity could become the fall’s sleeper hit. It cited the modest budget, the built-in readership and Hathaway’s momentum, as reported by the same outlet.

When UK audiences can see Verity

Verity opens in UK cinemas on Friday, Oct. 2, the same day as the US, according to ODEON. Its July guide said the film had no BBFC rating yet and would likely suit mature audiences only.

Hartnett said in that guide: “I don’t think people know what to expect from Verity and I like that.”

Weekend actuals will show how close tracking came to the final number.
