Adrianne Palicki played Tyra Collette across five seasons of Friday Night Lights, a role that became one of the show’s most-discussed arcs. Speaking to TV Insider ahead of the drama’s 20th anniversary, Palicki said the writers hadn’t yet worked out who Tyra was when the series began.
“At first, the writers didn’t know what to do with Tyra,” Palicki said.
According to the interview, Palicki and the writing staff spent the early episodes shaping a backstory together, since audiences weren’t immediately connecting with the character. Reportedly, that process paid off: Tyra grew into one of the series’ most layered figures, balancing family responsibility, an unstable home life and a storyline involving an attempted assault.

A character built through collaboration
Palicki has previously credited the show’s writers’ room for that shift, according to the outlet, describing Tyra as blunt and unpolished but ultimately “the smartest person in the room.” The actress left the series after its third season to let Tyra head off to college, a decision she has said she made jointly with the show’s head writer.
Friday Night Lights, based on H.G. Bissinger’s 1990 book and the 2004 film of the same name, followed the fictional Dillon Panthers high school football team and aired on NBC from 2006 to 2011 across five seasons.
UK viewers: no subscription option right now
British fans wanting to revisit Tyra’s arc won’t find Friday Night Lights on a UK streaming subscription. As of this month, the series is available in the UK only to buy or rent digitally, through Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video and Sky Store.
