NEW YORK, N.Y. — June 9, 2026 — Netflix and Sony Pictures Animation have announced Ghostbusters: Night Shift, a new 3D animated series set to debut exclusively on Netflix in 2027 — marking the franchise’s return to animation for the first time in nearly 30 years.

  • Ghostbusters: Night Shift was revealed on Ghostbusters Day (June 6, 2026) at Hook & Ladder 8 in New York City.
  • The series is a joint production from Netflix and Sony Pictures Animation, targeting a 2027 debut on Netflix globally — including the UK.

The Biggest Ghostbusters News in Decades

The title and logo for Night Shift were unveiled at the annual Ghostbusters Day celebration outside New York City’s iconic Hook & Ladder 8 firehouse on June 6, 2026.

The reveal ends years of speculation since the project was first announced at Ghostbusters Day 2022.

What We Know About the Show

The series will be produced by Flying Bark Productions — the studio behind Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Glitch Techs, and Stranger Things: Tales from ’85.

Showrunners Ben Hibon and Elliott Kalan are leading the creative charge, with Hibon’s credits including work on Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 and Star Trek: Prodigy.

Kalan is best known as the former head writer on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.

Plot details remain tightly under wraps, though the series has been described as tonally in line with Ghostbusters: Afterlife and Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire.

Kenan confirmed the show is in full development, with scripts, animation art, and supernatural worldbuilding already underway.

The Creative Team Behind It

“At Sony Pictures we’re incredibly proud of the lasting impact of the Ghostbusters franchise and the amazing fan community that continues to support it,” said Jay Levine, Executive Vice President at Sony Pictures.

Executive producers are Ben Hibon, Elliott Kalan, Jason Reitman, Gil Kenan, Amie Karp, and Dan Aykroyd.

Reitman directed Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021), while Kenan helmed Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire (2024) — both co-written together.

Original franchise co-creator Aykroyd brings four decades of Ghostbusters DNA to the project.

A Franchise-First Animation Return

Night Shift will be only the third animated Ghostbusters series ever made.

The Real Ghostbusters ran for six seasons between 1986 and 1991. Extreme Ghostbusters aired a single season in 1997.

By the time Night Shift premieres in 2027, nearly 30 years will have passed since the franchise last appeared in animated form.

UK Audiences: What to Expect

Ghostbusters: Night Shift will debut exclusively on Netflix worldwide in 2027 — meaning UK subscribers on plans from £4.99/month will have access on the same global launch date.

A world-exclusive preview of the series is set for the Annecy International Animation Film Festival on June 24, 2026, in Annecy, France — attended by Reitman, Kenan, Hibon, and Kalan.

No BBFC rating has been issued yet, though the series is expected to carry a family-friendly classification in line with the recent films.

What the Logo Hints At

The newly revealed Night Shift logo puts a stylised twist on the classic “No-Ghost” sign.

The visual approach has drawn early comparisons to Sony’s acclaimed Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse aesthetic — unsurprising given the Sony Pictures Animation pedigree.

The creative team has teased that horror and comedy will sometimes land simultaneously, and confirmed the show will feature plenty of cosplayable characters.
