Horror-comedy Widow’s Bay breaks Emmy record with 14 wins

A record-breaking sweep

The series became the most decorated freshman comedy in Emmy history at the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards. Widow’s Bay picked up six trophies on Monday’s telecast, adding to eight it won across the Creative Arts ceremonies the weekend before, according to Apple.

That combined haul of 14 surpasses the 13 wins The Studio collected a year earlier, setting a new all-time record for a comedy series in a single season, according to Variety. Widow’s Bay entered the night with 19 nominations.

Dippold, who created and showruns the series, accepted the night’s top prize, Outstanding Comedy Series. “Thank you, Apple, for letting us take this crazy, creative swing,” Dippold said, according to The Associated Press.

Rhys’s night: three trophies, two categories

Rhys, who plays skeptical mayor Tom Loftis, won Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for Widow’s Bay. He also won Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie, for a separate role in The Beast in Me. That made him the first man to win both leading-actor categories in the same year, according to PBS NewsHour.

As an executive producer on Widow’s Bay, Rhys also shares in the show’s Outstanding Comedy Series award, bringing his personal count to three trophies. He described the celebrations ahead as certain to run long, according to the same Associated Press report.

Dippold and Murai add writing and directing wins

Dippold also won Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series. Director Hiro Murai won Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series. He became the first Asian director to win in that category, according to PBS NewsHour.

Supporting actors Stephen Root and Kate O’Flynn each won for their performances as well. Actress Betty Gilpin had already picked up a guest-acting Emmy for the show at the Creative Arts ceremony earlier in September, as BriefLedger reported.
