TL;DR
- The Weed Eaters, directed by Callum Devlin, lands on Letterboxd Video Store from 26 August to 25 September 2026.
- The microbudget cannibal comedy was made for roughly NZ$20,000 and stars Alice May Connolly.
- It premiered at the New Zealand International Film Festival before winning best feature at SXSW Sydney.
- UK renters get exclusive access alongside the U.S., Canada, Australia and several European territories.
Jules, played by Connolly, joins her new boyfriend and his two stoner mates on a New Year’s Eve getaway in rural New Zealand. According to the official Letterboxd Journal announcement, the group stumbles onto a long-forgotten stash of ancient cannabis in an old shed. One smoke session and one accidental murder later, the weed leaves them with an overwhelming taste for human flesh.

The film is written by Finnius Teppett, who also stars, and produced by Causeway Films, the company behind Talk to Me and The Babadook, according to the same Letterboxd listing. It was shot on a crowdfunded budget of around NZ$20,000 by a small Aotearoa-based crew, and runs 80 minutes.

Festival run and critical reception
The Weed Eaters world-premiered at the New Zealand International Film Festival in 2025, where it was billed as a riotous entry in the country’s tradition of comic horror. It went on to win best feature at SXSW Sydney, according to Letterboxd.
Producer and cast member Annabel Kean told The Spinoff that most of the film’s gruesome food props were “pretty delicious” to prepare, joking that pork stood in for human flesh and that the brains were simply raspberry coulis over vanilla panna cotta.
Letterboxd’s write-up also cites reviewer Pardonmyfreedom’s assessment that the film mixes stoner comedy, rural weirdness and body-horror chaos without over-explaining the joke, while another reviewer likened it to a low-budget Kiwi riff on Donna Tartt’s The Secret History.
UK release details
Renters in the United Kingdom are among the exclusive territories able to stream The Weed Eaters on Letterboxd Video Store, alongside the U.S., Canada, Republic of Ireland, Australia and several Nordic markets, per the platform’s listing. The title arrives on the shelf alongside two other festival favourites, Downbeat and I Only Rest in the Storm, as part of Letterboxd’s recurring effort to get under-distributed festival films in front of a wider audience before wider theatrical or streaming release.
