Choose Your Own Adventure' Movie Coming from 'Scream' and 'Ready or Not' Directors

Radio Silence Is Bringing Choose Your Own Adventure to the Big Screen

20th Century Studios is developing a feature film adaptation of Choose Your Own Adventure, and they’ve landed exactly the right pair of directors for the job. Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, the filmmaking duo known as Radio Silence, will direct and produce the project from a script by Tom Bissell.

Bissell is not a small name to have on this. He’s a WGA Award winner with credits including Andor and The Disaster Artist. So, whoever you are as a reader, that resume should mean something to you.

Choose Your Own Adventure

The gamebook series began in 1979 as the first publishing effort of a new division at Bantam Books focused on younger readers, initially with so-so sales — until some genius in marketing seeded 100,000 copies in libraries across the country. Overnight, the books became a phenomenon. Between 1979 and 1999, the series sold over 250 million copies worldwide and was translated into 38 languages.

As for how Radio Silence plans to translate nonlinear, reader-directed storytelling into a feature film — that’s anyone’s guess. Black Mirror: Bandersnatch pulled off something similar for Netflix, though that came with the advantage of a platform that could actually let viewers click through diverging plot paths. (Netflix even faced a legal challenge from the Choose Your Own Adventure publisher over how closely it mirrored the books.) A theatrical release is a different beast entirely.

Radio Silence has built their reputation on balancing horror, humor, and inventive storytelling — Ready or Not became a cult favourite, and Scream VI helped revitalize one of the genre’s most iconic franchises. UK fans who caught Abigail in cinemas last year will know exactly what kind of energy they bring to high-concept genre work. Before Choose Your Own Adventure gets off the ground, the duo is currently in production on The Mummy 4, with original stars Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz returning.

No plot details, no release window, and no word yet on whether the film will attempt any interactive format. Plot details for the feature are not yet available. We’ll keep you posted on updates about Choose Your Own Adventure as the project develops.
