NEED TO KNOW

  • Diane Keaton died in Los Angeles on 11 October 2025, aged 79, according to her daughter.
  • She won best actress for Annie Hall and earned three more nominations, for Reds, Marvin’s Room and Something’s Gotta Give.
  • Leonardo DiCaprio said she “was one of a kind” as tributes poured in.

When Diane Keaton won best actress at the 50th Academy Awards in April 1978, she skipped the speech. Instead she performed “Seems Like Old Times,” the song she sang in Annie Hall.

It suited a star who never sounded rehearsed. Born Diane Hall in Los Angeles on 5 January 1946, she worked across six decades, moving between crime drama, romantic comedy and ensemble crowd-pleasers.

She died on 11 October 2025. Her daughter, Dexter Keaton White, confirmed the news to NBC News and said the family wanted privacy.

The Oscar itself was unusual. CBS News described it as an exceptionally rare win for a comic performance. She went on to earn three more nominations over three further decades.

Here’s everything to know about Diane Keaton’s greatest hits, and the roles that made her a Hollywood original.

Diane Hall became Diane Keaton because another actor already held her name

Keaton studied drama at Santa Ana College, then left to pursue acting in New York, NBC News reported. Her family had no ties to the film industry, according to NPR.

Actors’ Equity already listed a Diane Hall, so she took Keaton, her mother’s maiden name. She had a notable stage career before Hollywood came calling, NPR reported.

She joined The Godfather as Kay Adams in 1972

Her first major screen roles arrived in 1972, with Play It Again, Sam and The Godfather. In Francis Ford Coppola’s crime saga she played Kay Adams, the girlfriend and later wife of Michael Corleone.

She repeated the role in both sequels, including The Godfather Part II in 1974, CBS News reported.

Annie Hall made her a star and a style influencer

Woody Allen wrote Annie Hall loosely based on Keaton, according to Rolling Stone. They had already worked together on Sleeper, Love and Death and Interiors, and would reunite for Manhattan.

Critic Vincent Canby called her Annie “a marvelous nut,” NPR noted. Her outfits for the role made her a fashion influencer before the term existed.

The performance won her the Oscar at the 1978 ceremony, alongside best picture, director and screenplay wins for the film.

Reds, Marvin’s Room and Something’s Gotta Give brought three more nominations

Keaton earned Oscar nods for Reds in 1981, Marvin’s Room in 1996 and Something’s Gotta Give in 2003. Variety noted she moved quickly into more somber projects after Annie Hall.

The industry honored her career too, with the AFI Life Achievement Award in 2017. She also published her first memoir, Then Again, in 2011.

Baby Boom, Father of the Bride and The First Wives Club made her a comedy staple

Later audiences knew her through maternal comedies such as Baby Boom and Father of the Bride, according to Screen Realm. She co-starred with Hawn in The First Wives Club, then led the Book Club films.

She never stuck to one lane. In 2021 she appeared in Justin Bieber’s “Ghost” music video, Rolling Stone reported.

She became a mother at 50, and Hollywood mourned her at 79

Keaton never married. She didn’t start a family until she was 50, telling CBS News she was “a late developer.” Screen Realm reported she is survived by two adopted children, Dexter and Duke.

Tributes followed her death. Hawn and Kate Hudson posted First Wives Club memories on Instagram, and Jane Fonda said the loss was hard to accept.

Rolling Stone recalled that Keaton once told director Rob Reiner, “I don’t act, I am just who I am.”
