First trailer for ‘BLOODAXE’, a new Viking warriors series

Prime Video revealed the first teaser trailer for Bloodaxe, the new Viking series from Vikings creator Michael Hirst, at New York Comic Con on 9 October, and confirmed a 20 January 2027 premiere.

TL;DR

  • Bloodaxe premieres on Prime Video on 20 January 2027, with all eight episodes releasing at once.
  • The first teaser debuted at a New York Comic Con panel on Friday.
  • Xavier Molyneux plays Erik Bloodaxe and Jessica Madsen plays his wife, Gunnhild.
  • Season two is already in production in Ireland.

Release date and NYCC panel

The teaser debuted at a Comic Con panel with showrunners Hirst and Horatio Hirst, according to Variety. Cast members Molyneux, Madsen and Levi Miller joined them on stage.

Rotem Rusak, Nerdist’s editor-in-chief, moderated the discussion, according to the Prime Video press release. It was the first time the team had discussed the series publicly.

The streamer has been busy on the genre front lately. You can also catch the first Blade Runner 2099 trailer if you missed it.

What Bloodaxe is about

Season one follows the rise of Erik Bloodaxe (Molyneux) and his wife, Gunnhild, Mother of Kings (Jessica Madsen). They fight for the throne of Norway while rivals and shifting loyalties tear the land apart, according to the press release.

The synopsis also pulls in the kings of other Scandinavian countries and a powerful English ruler. Prime Video’s description of the teaser opens with the line “A king is dying, and his sons are already at war.”

The story is set in the 10th century, between Vikings and Vikings: Valhalla, Variety noted. Of course, a second season is already in production in Ireland, before the first has even aired.

Cast and crew

The first season stars Molyneux, Madsen, Karlis Arnolds Avots, Miller, Rod Hallett, Alina Tomnikov, Sisse Marie, Rune Temte and Jesper Christensen.

The Hirsts write, showrun and executive produce. MGM Television, a division of Amazon MGM Studios, produces the series.

How to watch Bloodaxe in the UK

Prime Video releases the series in more than 240 countries and territories at once. That puts UK viewers on the same schedule, with all eight episodes available on Wednesday 20 January 2027.

Prime membership currently costs £8.99 a month or £95 a year in the UK. The historical Erik is best remembered in England as the last Viking king of York, so expect the English storyline to matter.

We’ll keep you posted on updates about Bloodaxe as the project develops. In the meantime, Prime Video also recently ordered a RoboCop reboot series.
