Tubi Indie Spotlight: Psycho Ape Brings Killer Gorilla Chaos to UK Streaming

So, if you’ve ever wondered what happens when a killer gorilla, a girl named Nancy Banana, and a lightsaber dildo all end up in the same 64 minutes, Addison Binek has an answer. Psycho Ape! is currently streaming free on Tubi, and it’s exactly the kind of shameless, DIY schlock this column exists to shout about.

The film follows Nancy Banana (Kansas Bowling), sole survivor of a slumber party massacre pinned on an escaped ape decades earlier. Now the ape is back, hungry for revenge and armed with his weapon of choice: a banana. Bill Weeden plays the unhinged Dr. Zoomis, a psychologist-zookeeper-rapper hybrid tasked with hunting the creature down before the body count climbs any higher.

The B-movie devotion here is the whole point. According to a Film Threat review, the movie has such an infectious, carefree attitude that the sheer repetition of a guy in a gorilla suit killing people never gets old. Bloopers stay in the cut. Continuity is optional. Alas, subtlety was never invited to this shoot.

The Story Behind The Ape

Don’t get me wrong, the origins are darker than the finished product lets on. In an interview with PopHorror, Binek explained that he and co-writer Greg DeLiso both lost loved ones right before filming began, and making a “silly, low budget, killer monkey movie” became the distraction they needed. That grief-fueled chaos energy is baked into every frame.

Binek previously built a cult following through his riffing series Tromasterpiece Theatre, and it shows in how liberally Psycho Ape! parodies everything from King Kong to Inglourious Basterds. Anyone who enjoyed the recent slasher satire Runor the creature-feature goofs in Bad Day For Bigfoot should feel right at home.

UK viewers have it easy on this one. Tubi launched in the UK in July 2024 as a fully free, ad-supported service, and its library has only grown since, which means Psycho Ape! costs nothing to watch on this side of the pond. If you’re already a Tubi regular from checking out their recent Scooby-Doo anime deal, this one’s already sitting in your queue.

We wish the best of luck to any low-budget filmmaker out there trying to make a killer ape look this fun.
