  • Anderson, Brooks and Wilson got stuck in an Academy Museum lift for roughly 30 to 45 minutes.
  • The trio had just wrapped a Q&A marking the 30th anniversary of Bottle Rocket.
  • The Los Angeles Fire Department freed the group; a firefighter blamed excess weight in the car.
  • UK fans can stream Bottle Rocket now on Amazon Prime Video and BFI Player.

What happened at the Academy Museum

Director Wes Anderson, actor Luke Wilson and producer James L. Brooks appeared at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures on Monday evening for a sold-out 30th-anniversary screening and Q&A of Bottle Rocket, Anderson’s 1996 directorial debut, according to Variety.

While heading to their cars afterward, the group became trapped in a malfunctioning lift, alongside several other attendees. The Los Angeles Fire Department told TMZ it responded to a stuck-elevator call — elevator C — at the museum at 7:49 p.m.

The rescue, caught on camera

Carolyn Dunn, a production specialist for 20th Century Fox, shared an Instagram video showing Anderson, Wilson and Brooks walking free of the lift alongside a small crowd, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

In the clip, Anderson can be heard asking the rescue crew what had gone wrong. A firefighter answered that the lift “probably had too much weight in it.”

Variety contributor Carlos Aguilar, who attended the event, wrote on X that the night was “as delightfully peculiar as expected” chatting with Wilson and Brooks. Save Your Cinema, an X account, claimed the lift functioned as a private route for celebrities, though The Hollywood Reporter said it could not confirm whether Anderson had used an alternative entrance.

Bottle Rocket turns 30

Bottle Rocket starred Luke Wilson alongside his brother Owen Wilson, who co-wrote the script with Anderson. The film follows three friends who attempt a string of amateur heists and launched both Anderson’s and the Wilson brothers’ careers.

Director news from the same festival-and-anniversary circuit has been a recurring theme this year — Peter Jackson made similar headlines discussing a long-gestating passion project, while Kenneth Branagh has been pitching his own next chapter in recent interviews.

Reportedly, the elevator mishap has already sparked online speculation that Anderson could work a stuck-lift set piece into a future film, though nothing has been confirmed.

UK streaming: how to watch Bottle Rocket

For UK readers wanting to revisit the film, Bottle Rocket is currently available to stream on Amazon Prime Video and BFI Player, with rental and purchase options through Apple TV, Sky Store and Virgin Media Store, according to PlayPilot.

The anniversary event also lands in the same week UK-based fans of Anderson’s work have been tracking awards-season chatter, following Julianne Moore’s recent Cannes honour.
