Netflix’s Gears of War Movie Is “Going To Happen,” Says Director
David Leitch (The Fall Guy, Bullet Train) has some good news for fans who have been waiting, patiently or otherwise, for a Gears of War movie. In a recent interview with Collider, Leitch confirmed the Netflix adaptation is very much alive.
“Gears of War, I think, is going to happen,” Leitch said. “We have a great draft that’s in progress that’s in really great shape. The studio’s more determined than ever to make it. Netflix is 100% behind it. The Coalition is fired up, as well.”

The script is being drafted by Jon Spaihts, who previously wrote Prometheus, Doctor Strange, and both Dune films. So the screenplay is in capable hands, at least.
David Leitch says his ‘GEARS OF WAR’ movie has a strong script in development.

The project has been in development for many years, with multiple stops and starts dating back to the mid-2000s. All the way back in 2007, a year after the first Gears of War game came out, New Line Cinema purchased the rights to make a movie. Nothing ever came of that. Then in 2016, the rights changed hands and went to Universal. Nothing came of that, either.
Leitch and his wife and production partner Kelly McCormick are producing via their 87North banner. The film is also lining up to release alongside Gears of War: E-Day, a prequel title launching sometime in 2026 to coincide with Xbox’s larger 25th anniversary celebration. No cast has been announced yet, though Dave Bautista has been vocal about wanting in since 2018, so. We’ll see.
We’ll keep you posted on updates about Gears of War as the project develops.
