Robert Downey Jr. is confident as Doctor Doom after bold new Marvel quote
Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige told a Bilibili World 2026 audience in Shanghai on Saturday how Robert Downey Jr. reacted when offered the Doctor Doom role in Avengers: Doomsday, out in December.
TL;DR
- Feige said Downey’s reaction to the offer was that he’d played the best hero, so he could play the best villain.
- A pre-recorded video showed Downey alongside Chris Evans and Chris Hemsworth on the Doomsday set.
- Avengers: Doomsday opens in UK and US cinemas on Friday, 18 December 2026.
- The BBFC has already classified several Doomsday trailers, though the film itself has no rating yet.
Feige recounts Downey’s reaction to the villain offer
Speaking on the Bilibili World UP Main Stage, Kevin Feige, Marvel Studios’ president, described the moment he pitched Doctor Doom to Robert Downey Jr. According to Cosmic Book News, Feige said Downey’s exact words were, “I played the best hero… I can play the best villain.”
Nine years after Tony Stark’s death in Avengers: Endgame, Downey returns to the Marvel Cinematic Universe not as Iron Man but as the Latverian ruler Victor Von Doom. Feige has said the idea took shape in early 2023, around the time Downey was closing in on his first Academy Award, for Oppenheimer.

A video message from the Doomsday set
Downey did not attend in person. Instead, organizers played a clip filmed on the Doomsday set showing him alongside Chris Evans and Chris Hemsworth, with on-screen text confirming the trio were mid-shoot, according to Cosmic Book News. Marvel also unveiled new concept art at the event; our earlier report on Downey’s first Doctor Doom look covers the design in more detail.
Feige used the same appearance to tease Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova, hinting she could turn up sooner than expected. Fans connected that remark to this month’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day poster reveal.
What UK fans need to know
Avengers: Doomsday lands in UK cinemas on Friday, 18 December 2026, the same day as its US release, according to UK cinema listings site FilmDates.

Doom’s complexity, and what comes next
Feige has said Doom required an actor capable of carrying the character’s many sides. According to The Phrase Maker, he described Doom on stage as “a scientist… a technologist… a sorcerer and a ruler.”
The studio is positioning Doom as a central figure through Avengers: Secret Wars in December 2027, after which Feige has confirmed the X-Men will formally enter the MCU, according to Inven Global. That shift could reshape other corners of the franchise too, including Thor’s; Screen & Story looked at one version of that future in our piece on Kenneth Branagh’s pitch for a Logan-style Thor film.
Whether Downey can pull off the same trick twice, playing Marvel’s most beloved hero and then its most notorious villain, will not be tested until cinemas open in December.
