David Jonsson will play T’Challa’s son in Black Panther 3

Marvel makes it official at Comic-Con

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and director Ryan Coogler took the stage during Saturday’s Hall H panel to confirm the casting, according to Deadline. Coogler will write and direct the third Black Panther film, continuing the story he began with Chadwick Boseman in 2018.

The panel also confirmed Black Panther 3 will shoot entirely on 70mm film, a first for the franchise.

Who is T’Challa II?

The character was introduced as a young child at the end of 2022’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, revealed as the son of T’Challa and Nakia, played by Lupita Nyong’o. Jonsson will play an aged-up version of the prince as he comes of age, according to Variety.

Boseman, who originated the role of T’Challa in 2018, died of colon cancer in 2020 while Coogler was developing the sequel.

A British lead for Wakanda’s next chapter

Jonsson is an English actor from Custom House in East London and the 2025 BAFTA Rising Star Award winner, known for the BBC and HBO series Industry and the British romantic comedy Rye Lane. American audiences will also recognize him from Alien: Romulus and last year’s adaptation of Stephen King’s The Long Walk.

He isn’t the only Brit at the center of Wakanda’s next chapter. Letitia Wright, who took over the Black Panther mantle from Boseman’s T’Challa in Wakanda Forever, was born in Guyana and raised in London.

Wakanda Forever earned five Oscar nominations and one win, with Angela Bassett becoming the first performer nominated for an Academy Award for a Marvel role, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Wright reprises the mantle once more before the threequel, in this year’s Avengers: Doomsday.

What else Marvel revealed

Coogler’s Wakanda news was one of several reveals from Saturday’s panel, which also touched on Robert Downey Jr.’s turn as Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday. Coogler is also currently finishing work on an X-Files reboot pilot for the streamer.

Marvel has not announced further casting for Black Panther 3.
