Netflix develops live-action PUBG series with Donald Glover writing, directing and starring

Netflix is developing a live-action series based on the battle royale game PUBG, with Donald Glover set to write, direct and star, Krafton and Netflix announced on 29 October.

TL;DR

  • Netflix is developing a live-action PUBG series, with Glover writing, directing, starring and executive producing.
  • His brother Stephen Glover is also writing and executive producing.
  • No plot, wider cast or release date has been announced.
  • UK viewers will need a Netflix subscription, from £7.99 a month with adverts.

What Netflix and Krafton have confirmed

Glover, the two-time Emmy winner behind Atlanta, will write, direct, star in and executive produce the series, according to Deadline. He is writing with his brother, Stephen Glover, who co-created and wrote on Atlanta.

The executive producers are Michael Schaefer for NEON TV, Fam Udeorji for Gilga, and Taeseok Jang and Sujin Lee for LV3H, Krafton’s entertainment arm. Deadline said the project came together after lengthy negotiations, with Netflix bringing Glover on board.

How PUBG fits into Netflix’s games slate

The series joins a growing list of Netflix game adaptations, including a live-action Assassin’s Creed series and a Gears of War film, according to Deadline. Streamers elsewhere are chasing the same audience, as our look at Dave Bautista’s casting as Kratos in God of War shows.

PUBG still draws hundreds of thousands of daily players nearly 10 years after release, according to Variety. That gives Netflix a built-in audience before a single episode is shot.

What we still don’t know

Plot details are under wraps, Variety said, and neither company has named any other cast or the role Glover will play. There is no release date, and the project is in development rather than confirmed for production.

It is a rare creator-led swing at a game with little traditional story to adapt. Hollywood talent is also driving reboots elsewhere, as with Ryan Coogler’s The X-Files at Hulu.

When UK viewers can watch the PUBG series

No UK release date has been announced. The series will stream on Netflix, which raised its UK prices in September, according to ISPreview.

The Standard with adverts plan now costs £7.99 a month, while ad-free Standard costs £13.99.
