Xbox Switches to All-Caps XBOX on X After Fan Poll
Xbox CEO Asha Sharma ran a fan poll on X on 13 May asking whether the brand should be written as “Xbox” or “XBOX” — nearly 20,000 people voted, 65% chose all-caps, and the official account updated its name within hours.
TL;DR
- Xbox CEO Asha Sharma’s X poll drew 19,176 votes; 64.8% chose the all-caps XBOX spelling.
- The official Xbox account on X updated its name, logo, and bio — Bluesky and Threads haven’t changed yet.
- The move is part of Sharma’s wider brand reset, which also included dropping the “Microsoft Gaming” label and cutting Game Pass Ultimate to $23 monthly.
- Forza Horizon 6 launched in early access the same week, hitting 172,093 peak concurrent players on Steam.
How a fan poll rewrote the brand name
Sharma posed a simple two-option question to followers on X on 13 May: “Xbox” or “XBOX”? Of the 19,176 votes cast, the all-caps version won with 64.8% of the total. Microsoft’s response was swift — the official X account was renamed to XBOX, though its Threads and Bluesky accounts still carry the mixed-case spelling for now.
When The Verge contacted Microsoft for a statement, the company simply directed journalists back to Sharma’s original poll post.

A return to 2001 roots
The all-caps styling is not entirely new ground. The original Xbox logo used all capitals when the first console launched, and packaging designs for the Xbox 360, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S have also leaned on uppercase styling at various points.
The refreshed X account also debuted a glossy green logo, reviving the look associated with the original Xbox console. For UK fans who queued outside GAME stores in 2002 when the first Xbox arrived in Britain, it is a deliberate nod to where the hardware story began.
Sharma’s broader brand reset
The name change is one piece of a larger strategy. Under Sharma’s leadership, Microsoft dropped the “Microsoft Gaming” label entirely, returning to Xbox as the main consumer-facing identity, and also reduced the price of Game Pass Ultimate.
The rebrand carries extra weight because Xbox is in the middle of a broader identity shift, making even a small capitalisation question feel more significant than it ordinarily would.

Forza Horizon 6 launches the same week
The timing was not accidental. Forza Horizon 6 entered early access on 15 May 2026 for players who purchased the Premium Edition, with the full public release set for 19 May across Xbox Series X|S and PC — a PlayStation 5 version is confirmed for later in the year.
According to SteamDB, the game peaked at 172,093 concurrent players on Steam within hours of its Premium Edition early access opening on 14 May — more than double Forza Horizon 5’s all-time Steam peak of 81,096.
Playground Games, the Leamington Spa-based studio behind the Horizon series, set the game in Japan following years of fan requests, with Eurogamer’s five-star review praising the developer as “a developer at its peak.”
UK angle: Playground Games and the British studio behind the wheel
The UK connection here is significant. Playground Games has been based in Leamington Spa, Warwickshire since its founding in 2010, making it one of Britain’s most commercially successful first-party studios. In the UK, the Premium Edition is priced at £110 — every one of the 172,093 early-access Steam players either paid that figure or purchased a Premium Upgrade on top of an existing Game Pass subscription.
Eurogamer’s Dom Peppiatt gave the game five stars, writing that Forza Horizon 6 “finally delivers on the promises the original game made” after 14 years. The full UK release via Xbox Game Pass lands on 19 May.

What’s next
Sharma has not formally confirmed whether the XBOX capitalisation will roll out across all Microsoft storefronts, packaging, and marketing materials. For now it lives on X — with Bluesky and Threads still reading “Xbox.” A complete rollout across all digital channels is considered a formality, though no official timeline has been given.
Forza Horizon 6’s full launch on 19 May — when Game Pass subscribers can join Premium Edition players on the Japan map — will likely produce a second, higher Steam peak. Whether the XBOX rebrand lands on the disc art that ships inside British retailers that week remains to be seen.
